Airline Industry Leaders: 2050 Net Zero Goal Unlikely - What Went Wrong? (2026)

The aviation industry's ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 is facing significant challenges, according to industry leaders. This realization comes just five years after global airlines collectively pledged to eliminate net carbon emissions, with support from national aviation industry leaders and governments, including the UK. However, Willie Walsh, the director general of Iata, a global airlines body, warns that the industry is falling short of this target. Walsh, a former CEO of British Airways' parent company, points to fuel suppliers, governments, and aircraft manufacturers as the primary culprits for the likely failure to meet the 2050 goal.

The industry's reliance on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and a global emissions trading program, Corsia, is a major concern. Walsh highlights that Corsia is being undermined by government inaction, and annual SAF production is far from sufficient to meet the required 65% or 500 million tonnes by 2050. He also criticizes the 5% emission reduction target set by ICAO for 2030, stating that it is unattainable.

Airlines, according to Walsh, are doing their part, but they cannot achieve net zero on their own. He expresses disappointment in manufacturers' delayed delivery of efficient aircraft and the lack of reform in air traffic management systems, which could significantly reduce emissions. Walsh also criticizes fuel companies for not delivering on their promises.

Environmental campaigners have long viewed the industry's pledges as greenwashing, allowing continued expansion of flying. This admission may prompt further reflection from governments, particularly the UK, which is considering expanding Heathrow Airport while requiring climate tests to be met. The UK's recent achievement of the 2% SAF minimum by 2025, largely from imported recycled cooking oil, is a small step, but future targets for next-generation fuels like e-SAF are questionable due to production limitations.

Iata's sustainability vice-president, Marie Owens Thomsen, agrees that the UK and EU e-SAF targets for 2030 are unrealistic and could drive up prices. This situation raises questions about the feasibility of the aviation industry's net zero goal and the role of governments and manufacturers in achieving it. Walsh's call for a realistic timeline and urgent dialogue highlights the industry's need for a more pragmatic approach to address the challenges of decarbonization.
